Description
Unlike the Sugar Maple leaf found on the Canadian flag that has three to five distinct lobes, the Red Maple generally has three lobes. It is also distinguished by the fact that the leaf stem also turns red in the fall. Trees lose their green colour in the fall when the chlorophyll production stops due to the cooler temperatures and decreased daylight. The glucose left in the leaf changes colour due to the red pigment bearing anthocyanins present. Source: Tree Canada
